0. Context

Sonoff expands its Zigbee sensor lineup with two IP65-rated models, designed to monitor temperature via a probe (SNZB-02LD) or both temperature and humidity (SNZB-02WD). Intended for indoor and outdoor use, these sensors combine durability, an LCD display, and long battery life. While some existing sensors offer probes or combine temperature and humidity measurement, none were IP65-rated—something that proves very useful in many smart home scenarios.

1. Presentation

The SNZB-02LD features a waterproof IP65 enclosure (62.8 x 58.5 x 21.8 mm), a 2.2-inch LCD display, and an external Dallas DS18B20 probe (1.5 m). Total weight: approx. 86 g.
The SNZB-02WD uses the same enclosure and screen but integrates a Sensirion SHT40 sensor to measure temperature and humidity without an external probe. Weight: approx. 66 g.
Included accessories: reset pin, hanging cord, Velcro (for the SNZB-02LD only).

Dimensions 62.8 x 58.5 x 21.8 mm, 150 cm probe 62.8 x 58.5 x 21.8 mm
Weight 86 g (with probe) 66 g
Refresh rate ~6 seconds ~5 seconds
Zigbee range (outdoors) ~25 m without repeater ~25 m without repeater

Note: While a 30-meter range is advertised, some disconnections were observed beyond 25 m in real-life outdoor conditions without a repeater.

2. Pairing

Pairing is standard Zigbee 3.0:

  • Press and hold the reset button (using the pin) for 5 seconds.

  • The Zigbee icon on the display blinks rapidly in the top-left corner, indicating pairing mode.

  • Use Sonoff ZBBridge, iHost, NSPanel Pro, or compatible Zigbee hubs (ConBee II, Zigbee2MQTT, Home Assistant ZHA).

  • The device is correctly identified by its name and type.

In open-air conditions, the Zigbee signal is claimed to reach up to 30 meters. In practice, this varies greatly indoors depending on obstacles such as walls and furniture. For better stability, powered Zigbee devices (smart plugs, bulbs) should be used as repeaters. In my tests, 25 m has proven stable for over a month outdoors without any dropouts.

    2.1 ZIGBEE2MQTT

    • Full integration supported.

    • Calibration of the sensor values is possible (both temperature and humidity).

    • Compatible with Jeedom and Home Assistant.

    2.2 ZHA

Also compatible with Home Assistant’s ZHA integration, with proper recognition of sensor entities.

    3. Use cases

I use the SNZB-02LD to monitor the water temperature in my fish pond:

    • Below 10 °C: everything stays off.

    • Between 10 and 15 °C: the pump runs every hour for 15 minutes during the day, and every 2 hours at night.

    • Above 15 °C: the pump runs continuously during the day and every 2 hours for 15 minutes at night (neighborhood noise considerations).
This logic includes a check to ensure the pump has been off for 2 hours using duration(#command#, value).

I use the SNZB-02WD to monitor outdoor temperature:

    • If it’s not raining and the house is in summer mode, when the outside temperature drops below the indoor temperature, the Velux windows open automatically.

    4. Conclusion

    Strengths:

    • IP65 protection suitable for outdoor use

    • Wide temperature range with good accuracy

    • External probe (SNZB-02LD) useful for specific applications

    • Fast data refresh (~5 seconds)

    • Native integration with eWeLink, Jeedom, and Home Assistant

    • Solid battery life (~2 years)

    • LCD display allows local reading without a phone

    • Multiple mounting options, including magnetic cover

    Weaknesses:

    • Humidity accuracy could be improved, sometimes needs calibration

    • Probe cable limited to 1.5 meters (SNZB-02LD)

    • No support for other environmental metrics (CO2, pressure)

    • Realistic Zigbee range is closer to 25 m without repeater
